The Middle-earth College Life AU meme

Congrats, you've been accepted to college / university! Or maybe you work there? Maybe you're even the President or a Dean of studies! Either way - there's classes to attend or teach, parties to go to, and fraternities/sororities to belong to. Cheer for the sports team, and don't forget about extra curricular activities.

Shire institute of Culinary Arts: Aspiring chefs, look no further. A wide variety of specialty degrees are available, but it's best known for their potato program. Dorms are said to be "cozy", but the meal plan is next to none. The typical "freshman 15" here is expanded to the "freshman 30," but no one seems to mind.	Rivendell University and Teaching Hospital: You might know that Rivendell's medical program it top notch, but you might not know that it also has a robust music program as well. It boasts a diverse student body and easy admittance process. The dorms are next to none, with full meal plan, entertainment, and laundry service.	University of Caras Galadhon: This university is so exclusive, that only students and staff know how to even get to the campus. Needless to say, their athletic teams never have home games. Extracurricular activities include boating and archery. All dorms begin on the 10th floor.
Woodland U: Literally spelled Woodland "U" because half their applicants can't spell "university." All students are required to be on one of the athletics teams. Known for its party scene. Their rival is the nearby Erebor Trade School. It's motto is "We will endure" because many of it's students stay much longer than the usual four year plan.	Erebor Trade School: Anyone hoping to become a craftsman or jeweler aspires admittance to this school. Tuition used to be rather high before a massive campus fire and a change of administration. Remodeling is ongoing. Erebor encourages drinking, even though half its students are miners.	Gondor Military Academy: Used to be a more prestigious institution until the neighborhood appeal changed by the nearby Mt. Doom's expansion and construction. Recently subject to rumors about the president losing touch with the needs of the students.
Rohan Agricultural College: Probably the smallest and least expensive school in Middle-earth. Sister school to Gondor Military Academy, and known for its equestrian program and rural location. The dorms and meal plans here are said to be lacking.	Mt Doom College: Recently had a resurgence in numbers, Mt. Doom is known for its aggressive recruiting policy and strict dress code. Now has a campus at Orthanc, which used to be an independent institution.	Two Trees Seminary: This university can boast that it's faculty are all at the top of their fields. Known for it's idyllic location, Two Trees has a very strict moral code, but most students who enroll never leave campus. The Dormitory is located in the building simply known as "The Halls."

Celebrian | Rivendell University

[silvergift]

[Celebrían is an average student with a performing arts major. She has a full scholarship (though not for a lack of means) and a dorm on campus as well as an apartment off. Much of her free time is spent wandering the ground though, practicing any music she's given in the aim of nailing a part in non-school related shows.]

[Surprise, Bri, one of your cousins has come to lecture on poli sci and has decided to visit.

[She's just braiding her hair, getting it out of her face while she looks over new sheet music and lyrics when she hears the knock. She finishes it quickly, the last couple plaits turning messy (she really wasn't expecting company), and tugs the door open.]

[For a moment, she just stares at him. And then there's a delighted almost-squeal as she throws her arms around him in a hug.]

You didn't tell me you were coming!

[Fingon laughs, hugging her tightly]

It wasn't planned. I meant to visit your mother first, but there was a conflict and so I came to Rivendell. How are you?

Oh, you're going to hear it from her. [She laughs though so clearly it won't be too terrible when Galadriel finds out.]

I'm alright, planning on trying out for the next musical we put on.

Oh, really? Any ideas what it is? Have you asked Maglor for help?

Not entirely yet, only that it will revolve around Yule. And I have, he's been helping me practice my high notes since my roommates don't entirely appreciate it.

[silvanking]

[The cheerful blond Elf happens to be visiting friends at RU that weekend, and he stops to hear her practicing with a smile.]

Wow, you're doing a great job!

[silvergift]

[There's a sound of surprise, Celebrían turning quickly to look to Amroth.]

Great? I'm not so sure. I feel like I'm not hitting the notes quite right.

[silvanking]

[He considers.]

Maybe... But you're close! Mind if I give it a try?

[silvergift]

Sure, go ahead. [She hands over the music with a smile.] Not quite sure you'll be able to hit all the notes I have to though, you don't look quite like a soprano.

[silvanking]

I'll have you know I make a fine tenor. Just bring it down an octave.

[He looks over the notes, humming them under his breath to sightread them.]

All right, I think I've got it. [And he gives it a try, transposed down an octave, and, yes, he does have a lovely, butter-rich tenor.]

[silvergift]

[Well, color her surprised.]

Not bad. [She smiles after he's finished.] Don't think you're sneaking my part out from under me though.

[silvanking]

[He laughs]

Wouldn't dream of it. I'm just an engineering student. I don't even attend here.

Although... How's your breath control? It could make a difference.

[silvergift]

[Laughing softly.] Then what are you hanging around us RU students for?

I've been getting better. Maglor has been working with me on it.

[ The music teacher at Rivendell's an odd fellow. Quiet and reclusive, he seldom leaves the music rooms (which double as his office). There are plenty of rumors about where he comes from and what he's doing there, but there's absolutely no doubt that he's brilliant at his job. Right now he has a private tuition class on and this is totally not nepotism he doesn't know what you're talking about ]

Good - you still need to work on those high notes, but your breathing is much better.

[Odd as he is, no one can even try to deny that he's good at his job, that he doesn't know his trade. And that was why Celebrían had chosen his class over others. A better teacher meant better opportunities and help where she genuinely would need it rather than comments about how lovely her voice is or some other unhelpful nonsense.]

The high notes are a little harder to practice. My roommates don't appreciate music like I do.

[bythewaves]

[ A small amused sound ] Hm. Their loss. If you like Celebrian, I can ask for permission to let you come in here to practice after hours. You are aiming for the Yule musical, are you not? The more practice the better, and the rooms here have soundproofing.

[silvergift]

Ah, could you? It would be such a big help. Especially since, yeah, I have been aiming for the musical. It's a great chance for me to really get my feet wet.

[That and she's already convinced her parents to come and see it. If she gets a part, it will be a great surprise for them but, for now, they were just coming to see it with her.]

[bythewaves]

Of course! [ He smiles fondly at her ] You are thinking of going for the lead soprano? It is a difficult part to sing, but I think with practice you might be ready in time.

Now, shall we try that piece again? See if you can remember the circular breathing trick.

[silvergift]

Of course, aiming for the stars. I may not get it but I have to try. [Although with Maglor's help, maybe she'll have a good chance of it.]

Yeah, alright. [She flips back to the first page of the music and smiles, taking a few breaths to ready herself.]

[bythewaves]

[ He smiles at her ] Of course, I will have to give the role to the one best suited but you are well on your way there, Celebrian.

[ a nod ] When you're ready then - from the top.

Well, I'll do my best then. If only to make sure all this extra effort doesn't go to waste. [And especially since he's going through the trouble of helping her.]
