The Middle-earth College Life AU meme

Congrats, you've been accepted to college / university! Or maybe you work there? Maybe you're even the President or a Dean of studies! Either way - there's classes to attend or teach, parties to go to, and fraternities/sororities to belong to. Cheer for the sports team, and don't forget about extra curricular activities.

Shire institute of Culinary Arts: Aspiring chefs, look no further. A wide variety of specialty degrees are available, but it's best known for their potato program. Dorms are said to be "cozy", but the meal plan is next to none. The typical "freshman 15" here is expanded to the "freshman 30," but no one seems to mind.	Rivendell University and Teaching Hospital: You might know that Rivendell's medical program it top notch, but you might not know that it also has a robust music program as well. It boasts a diverse student body and easy admittance process. The dorms are next to none, with full meal plan, entertainment, and laundry service.	University of Caras Galadhon: This university is so exclusive, that only students and staff know how to even get to the campus. Needless to say, their athletic teams never have home games. Extracurricular activities include boating and archery. All dorms begin on the 10th floor.
Woodland U: Literally spelled Woodland "U" because half their applicants can't spell "university." All students are required to be on one of the athletics teams. Known for its party scene. Their rival is the nearby Erebor Trade School. It's motto is "We will endure" because many of it's students stay much longer than the usual four year plan.	Erebor Trade School: Anyone hoping to become a craftsman or jeweler aspires admittance to this school. Tuition used to be rather high before a massive campus fire and a change of administration. Remodeling is ongoing. Erebor encourages drinking, even though half its students are miners.	Gondor Military Academy: Used to be a more prestigious institution until the neighborhood appeal changed by the nearby Mt. Doom's expansion and construction. Recently subject to rumors about the president losing touch with the needs of the students.
Rohan Agricultural College: Probably the smallest and least expensive school in Middle-earth. Sister school to Gondor Military Academy, and known for its equestrian program and rural location. The dorms and meal plans here are said to be lacking.	Mt Doom College: Recently had a resurgence in numbers, Mt. Doom is known for its aggressive recruiting policy and strict dress code. Now has a campus at Orthanc, which used to be an independent institution.	Two Trees Seminary: This university can boast that it's faculty are all at the top of their fields. Known for it's idyllic location, Two Trees has a very strict moral code, but most students who enroll never leave campus. The Dormitory is located in the building simply known as "The Halls."

"No, no, my last class just finished and I'm quite free for the rest of the day." There were still essays to mark and lessons to plan of course but Frodo has always been his priority over those. "You know I always have time for you, Frodo."

"Lovely!" He smiled and moved over to give his uncle a hug. He saw the piles of papers on Bilbo's desk and his smile faltered slightly. The last thing he wanted to do was intrude. "Would you like to go get some lunch? I'm free for the rest of the day as well."

Bilbo hugs back, ruffling Frodo's dark head of curls as he did. "Of course. Did you have a place in mind?" He saw Frodo's look towards the work still left on his desk and and dropped an companionable arm aroudn his nephew's shoulders, subtly herding him towards the door.

Frodo shook his head. "No, the usual tavern will suffice. I'm here for the company, not the food." And for once, a hobbit said it and meant it. Reluctantly, he let Bilbo lead him away, heading out into the hallway. "How was class today?"

Bilbo smiled broadly and let the way in an easy walk towards Frodo's favorite tavern. "Not bad, not bad at all. There was a bit of spirited discussion over the use of spices in rabbit stew but they were in good spirits when they left so no harm done." When he said spirited, it meant there were actual shouting involved. "How about you? Studies going well?"

"Studies are well, a little tough but well." He chuckled, letting Bilbo lead him away with a smile. He was pretty sure that he knew in just what context Bilbo meant when he said spirited. He never tried to interrupt when Bilbo was cooking in the Shire. "I can imagine. And just what is your opinion of rabbit stew spices?" He didn't want to tell Bilbo how he had been struggling a little with his coursework.

"I'm sure you'll do fine, Frodo." Bilbo has the utmost faith if Frodo. His nephew was a hard worker and a talented cook, a combination that would do him quite well later on. "Ah well, that depends on the cook's taste, who they are cooking for, and what they are pairing the rabbit stew with." There was no right answer and as long as they could explain and back up their answer properly Bilbo will accept almost anything.

The inn was just a few steps away now and he pushed the door open for his nephew to enter first.

Frodo chuckled and stepped inside, looking around the inn for a place to sit. With Bilbo behind him, Frodo made his way to a small table off to the side and shrugged off his coat.

It was no secret that Bilbo was one of the best cooks in the Shire. He cared about his food and his spices, more so than even the best hobbit. It was something he admired most in his Uncle. "So many things to consider, Uncle." He chuckled and looked up at Bilbo. "You know, I don't think I've had your cooking in a while. I think you might need to remind me."

Bilbo followed suit, his own coat hanging neatly from the back of his chair before he took a seat. Before long, the innkeeper was bustling up, asking for their choices in drink and foot. He asked for their shepherd's pie and a half-pint of their ale, both inn specialties.

Privately, Bilbo thought every aspiring cook should take an extended trip out of the Shire. Queer and odd his fellow hobbits may think him after the trip, but he felt himself inspired afterwards. "Cooking is as complicated as you make it, my boy." He smiled broadly at the hint for invitation. "You are welcome any time for dinner, Frodo. You know that. Tonight?"

"Yes, but will it be dinner or a lesson," he teased gently. When the ale's arrived, Frodo took his and gently tapped it against Bilbo's in a toast. The food and drink was just what he needed after a long day of studying. And having his favourite uncle as a dining companion only made it that much better, in his opinion.

His shoulders shrugged as he took a sip of his ale. "It seems complicated. I've seen all the dishes you've made. It's not easy to keep up with all that we eat, uncle." His smile slipped a little. "I'm not sure I would know where to begin, other than nibbling on an apple."

"I promise not to lecture you on the ten uses of lovage during dinnr, how about that, Frodo?" Bilbo laughed and lifted his ale in a return toast to his nephew. The food and ale was as good as ever, and Bilbo dug in with a gusto. Teaching was hungry work.

Bilbo paused as he saw his nephew's usual sweet smile disappear for a moment. "Cooking is as complicated as you make it, Frodo. Take the apple you are nibbling. It is lovely as it is on its own, is it not? What can you do to enhance one or more of what it already is? From there it is simply trial and error."
